Athlete Eligibility
In Order to Compete
Minimum Age
Athletes must be 8 years old or older to compete. There is no maximum age limit. Younger athletes ages 2–7 can participate in our Young Athletes Program.
Eligibility
Athletes must be identified by a qualified professional or agency as having: an intellectual disability, or a closely related developmental disability that causes limitations in both general learning and adaptive skills.
Not eligible based solely on
Physical, behavioral, emotional, specific learning, or sensory disabilities.
Multiple disabilities
Individuals with multiple disabilities may participate if they meet the eligibility requirements above.
Children ages 2–7 with intellectual disabilities can participate in the Young Athletes Program to develop basic sports skills and prepare for future Special Olympics participation.
