The Elwood Johnson Outstanding Service award recognizes a member of the Law Enforcement Torch Run community that represents the best of LETR’s commitment to philanthropy and community impact. The award was established and named in honor of longtime law enforcement member and Special Olympics Rhode Island supporter, Elwood Johnson Jr., in 2023. Each Rhode Island law enforcement department or agency nominates one member of their department or agency who has had a significant positive impact on the mission of Special Olympics Rhode Island. Nominees represent the best of LETR’s commitment “to provide opportunities for athletes to empower and transform themselves, their communities, and the world.” All nominees are selected as their department or agency’s Outstanding Service Award recipient and become eligible to win the state award. The winner of the state award each year will earn the honor to represent LETR and join a Special Olympics Rhode Island athlete at the state summer games to carry the flame of hope and light the summer games cauldron.

Nomination forms are now available. Visit www.specialolympicsri.org/awards for details. Nominations are due January 16th. All materials must be mailed or emailed to LETR@specialolympicsri.org. Nomination Presentations. Once nomination is confirmed, departments and agencies present nominee with outstanding service award. Announcement of State Winner at the annual LETR Kick-Off Luncheon. The LETR Committee chairperson and the President and CEO of Special Olympics Rhode Island will announce the state winner in cooperation at the annual LETR conference.
