What: The 11th Special Olympics World Summer Games will be held in Ireland in 2003.
Who:
  • 7,000 Athletes
  • 3,000 Coaches and Official Delegates
  • 28,000 Families and Friends
    Where: The Games and competition will be centered around the Greater Dublin area. However the entire island of Ireland will have an opportunity to play an integral part in the event. A feature of these World Games will be a Host Town Programme where all the participating teames will be hosted by local communities from the 16th- -20th June 2003. Each team will have an opportunity to relax, acclimatise and train before moving to their Games accommodation on 20th June 2003.
    Mission: The Mission of the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2003:

         "To provide in Ireland a unique and unparalleled sporting and cultural expirience for the athletes taking part, from Europe and all over the world, as well as their coaches, families, volunteers, and sponsors, combining the excitement of sport with the opportunity for personal distinction and pride."

    The Games Organising Committee: The Chairman of the Games is Mr. Denis O'Brien, former Chairman and Chief Executive Esat Telecom Group Plc. The Games Organising Committee Board of Directors include corporate, political, media, entertainment, and sports leaders from the entire island of Ireland.

    Sports Offered: The Special Olympics World Summer Games 2003 will include Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Bocce, Bowling, Cycling, Equestrian, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Power Lifting, Rollerskating, Sailing, Table Tennis, Tennis, Team Handball, and Vollyball.

    • A comprehensive motor activity will be offered as part of the games. (This is a non-competitive programme for athletes who have not yet acquired the skills to participate fully in a competitive environment.)
    Number of Sport Venues: 18
    Number of Countries: 160
    Volunteers needed: 30,000
    Volunteer Recruitment: Will begin on January 2001.
    Number of Media: 1500 from around the world.
    Spectators Expected: 500,000 during games week.
    Budget: The cost of staging the Games will be IR£24 million. The Irish Government has already committed IR£5 million. Bank of Ireland are the Premier Partners for the Games and plans are underway to raise the remaining IR£16.75 million through sponsorship and in kind support.

    As promised at the 2001 Special Olympics Rhode Island Fall Conference, below please find a list of sports, athlete and coaching slots for Team USA – Rhode Island.

    Please complete the enclosed athlete and coaches form and return to the Special Olympics office attention Selection Committee before March 1, 2002.

    Before completing the nomination form, read the athlete and coach criteria enclosed.

    Summary: The 2003 Games will showcase the athletic skills, courage, and dignity of 7000 athletes with a learning disability from around the world.

    The opening ceremony will take place on Saturday 21st June 2003 at Croke Park.

    Over the following nine days, competition will take place at a variety of venues and locations including Morton Stadium, the National Basketball Arena, the RDS, Kill International Equestrian Centre, the National Badminton Centre, and the Pheonix Park.

    The 2003 Games will be the largest sporting and cultural events ever staged in Ireland.
