Americans recognize
Special Olympics as the country's most credible charity,
according to the results of a nationwide survey published in the
December 13, 1996 issue of The Chronicle fo Philanthropy.
The Chronicle survey, conducted by Ny Lavelle & Associates of
Dallas, Texas, noted that 73 percent of Americans rated Special
Olympics "very honest or extremely honest." The organization
outpaced its nearest competitor by 8 percentage points.
Special Olympics also placed high in other categories of the
Chronicle survey. It ranked 13th overall as "Best Liked", 9th
"most frequently donated to", and 10th most "strongly
supported".

Special Olympics Rhode Island
Special Olympics Rhode Island provides year-round sports
training and competition for children and adults with
intellectual disabilities. Over 2,500 athletes are involved with
Special Olympics across the state. Each year, Special Olympics
Rhode Island hosts more than 40 tournaments and competitions in
24 different sports.
The Special Olympics Rhode Island program is one of the most
innovative and dynamic in the world. Special Olympics Rhode
Island is a non-profit organization which contributes to the
lifelong physical, social and personal development of people
with intellectual disabilities in Rhode Island. The Special
Olympics Rhode Island program involves hundreds of children and
adults in exciting and rewarding competition, training and
events.
Special Olympics Rhode Island
provides many vital programs including:
- the Unified
Sports Program, in which teams of athletes with and without
intellectual disabilities compete in a variety of sports;
- the Motor
Activities Training Program (MATP) designed for athletes
with profound disabilities;
- the Global
Messenger Program which trains athletes in public-speaking,
who in turn serve as spokespersons for Special Olympics.
In addition, two
athletes currently serve as members of the Board of Directors,
several athletes produce a half-hour television show on Cox
Sports Television (Ch 3).
Games:
Special Olympics Rhode Island
offers competition in 24 official and demonstration sports.
Three Regional Area Games, and Winter and State Summer Games are
also held annually.
