Coaching Certification

Coach with an athlete.

All head and assistant coaches are strongly encouraged to become certified in the sport(s) in which they are coaching. Each team attending a Special Olympics Rhode Island competition MUST have at least one certified coach on its coaching staff.

The following are requirements to become certified in any sport.

  1. Complete the volunteer requirements for all Class A volunteers – Class A Volunteer form (PDF, 50KB).
  2. Complete Protective Behaviors Training on-line.
  3. Complete Special Olympics Rhode Island General Orientation Session and General Orientation Quiz (PDF, 1.49MB).
  4. Attend a sports specific training school in the sport offered.
  5. Complete 10 hours of working with Special Olympics Rhode Island athaltes under an experienced coach.
  6. Complete the Special Olympics application for Sports Training Certification and submit it to Casie Rhodes at the Special Olympics Rhode Island office.
  7. All sport specific training school will be listed on the Coaches Education Calendar.

Sports training and coaches education will provide coaches with the resources to help enhance practice routines as well as athletic training.
